What time do we want to tee off

May 27, 2008

Due to popular demand, another voting post is here:

Do we want to play 9 or 18 holes the day after KK’s wedding…. Lets just assume that everybody shows up and we have 14 players at the golf course on Sunday, if we want to get 18 holes in, we need to tee off at 4:00 or so.  If we only want to play 9, we can start our tee times at like 6:00 or so…

Please post your preference on 9 or 18 holes for the first day of OMGG.

OMGG season is just around the corner

May 27, 2008

Well Ladies and Gentlemen, the Old Man Golf Group Season starts in under two weeks.  On June 8th, 2008, the season will kick-off at Enger Park Golf Course.  The name of the game for week 1 is Four-Ball.  The Four-Ball pairings will be finalized at the golf course depending on who shows up.  Each team is allowed to group their 2 man teams however they want, the home team (Lakeview Legends) will get to see who the Heater Huffers put on the tee box before choosing which team they put out there to match up with them.  These are match play events, with each event worth 1 point a hole plus 2 points for the 9 hole total, so each match has 11 points available…

John Baggs

May 12, 2008

B-A-G-G-S, Baggs. Some call him Mr. Baggs, some refer to him as coach, he is known as “the godfather”, and others will simply call him John. For the purpose of this post, I will refer to him as the intimidater. Both the opponents and the teammates of this OMGG member will be intimidated with just his presence on the golf course. Known for his deadly putter and the spin doctor wedge, you will be hard pressed to find a better short game in the group. that being said, I think we have found “the face” of short games(see gmoney34 blog for more info). back to the topic at hand, the intimidation factor will be hard to overcome for the lakeview legends, the intimidater has been known to wave the flag while the opponents are putting and even talking trash in backswings. teammates will need to have a strong head on their shoulders as any mistake will clearly be called out and you will be subject to ridicule and degrading comments from you partner. expect the intimidater to be solid when the game is on the line… when you have a ten footer that needs to be drained, this is the guy you want standing over the nike platinum.

DJ Lahti

May 9, 2008

DJ is a lefty that is steadily improving his game.  Formerly a big slicer, DJ now hits the ball pretty straight and now after being fully healed after shoulder surgery, the club comes through the contact zone at a very favorable angle.  DJ uses a belly putter which is actually pretty hot.  Keeping the ball in bounds is the name of the game for DJ.  Still dedicated to Oulu Baseball, DJ will have a tough time turning the corner to the OMGG.  The Lakeview Legends will have to determine how to deal with this cat.

Tom Berrisford

May 9, 2008

TBird has been struggling with a case of the hooks off and on over the last two seasons.  However, the bird shot a solid 40 during his first round at Enger this summer.  When the game is on, there is a reason they call him STB, short for Steady Tom Berrisford because he is exactly that… Steady as can be.  One of the most dominant baseball players in Duluth Lakeview history, Tom has been known to have a bit of a temper.  2 outstanding instances come to my mind.  Summer of 1999 or 2000 or 2001, one of the three… Hole number 4 at LPGC front nine.  Not sure what club, but whatever it was, it duck hooked into the left woods I believe.  The Club went about 25 feet into a nearby pine tree.  Being the good friend that I am, I offered to risk my life to climb the tree and retrieve the golf club without hesitation.   The second incidnet was in 2007 during the CSS Baseball Alumni Golf Tournament on the 3rd hole of the tournament.  After a 3 putt triple bogey I believe, TB launched his putter into the woods and headed to the next tee box.  Now the putter had a bright orange handle, so the thought at the time was that it would be an easy find.  So me, KK and DJ headed into the woods on an all out search for the putter.  With Bird still on the next tee box, he yells at the three of us to get going and leave the bleepidy bleep putter.  Concerned for our friend well being, we continued to search on for the next 5 minutes until we were officially holding up play and were nearly penalized for slow play, we had to leave the putter behind.  Tom decided to putt lights out on the next 3 holes.  As we came down 16, we decided to take another swing through the woods in the area of the lost putter.  DJ spotted the orange handle of the putter about 8 feet up in a tree after about a 3 minute search and the bird was able to finish his round with all 14 clubs.  Unfortunatly Tommy still mssed the cut, but it is a story I will remember for the rest of my life.

Corey Kemp

May 9, 2008

I have been told that the season is quickly approaching, so I am rushing out the player profiles.  Mr. Kemp as they call him in the classroom is a streaky golfer.  When he is on his game, I think he can play with anybody except fot the top two players, KK and BMart.  Corey fits in well with the Lakeview Legends, if nothing else, his Legion baseball team, the Hermantown Grizzlies have a solid showing and the lakeview classic tournament every year.  CK had a very steady putter by utilizing “the claw”.  If your on the course with CK, you can expect to hear at least one rendition of build me up butter cup.

Where do the new guys go

May 8, 2008

The old man golf group needs to put the two new guys on a team.  For those of you that didn’t get the notice, the two new guys are:

  • Justin Harriman
  • Joe Hennessy
  • Both dudes are equally sweet on the golf course.  So, you have the option to choose for 1 person to be on one team.  Only your latest post counts and I will tally up the votes whenever I review and see more than 3 posts…

    Go get em.
